The CMA USA qualification has two parts: Part 1 (Financial Reporting, Planning, Performance and Analytics) and Part 2 (Strategic Financial Management). Each part has 100 multiple-choice questions and 2 essay scenarios, with a total of 500 marks and a passing score of 360. You can sit Part 1 and Part 2 in either order. Exams are offered in three windows per year: January–February, May–June, and September–October.
Yes. BCom, BBA, and MBA graduates are eligible to sit the CMA exam. IMA requires a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and two years of qualifying work experience in management accounting or financial management. The degree and work experience requirements can be completed concurrently – you can sit the exam while you are still building your experience. For students in the final year of their degree, IMA allows exam registration before graduation.
CMA USA is the Certified Management Accountant designation awarded by IMA (Institute of Management Accountants), USA. It is recognised in 150+ countries and specifically valued for global and MNC roles in management accounting and strategic finance. Indian CMA is awarded by ICAI (The Institute of Cost Accountants of India) and is the primary management accounting qualification for Indian domestic roles. Senior roles such as Finance Controller or Finance Director range from ₹30 to ₹60 LPA and above. The IMA 2023 Global Salary Survey found that CMA holders earn 21% more in total compensation than non-certified peers globally, and 41% more for professionals under 26.
Yes – the CMA is designed for working professionals. The IMA recommends approximately 170 hours of study for Part 1 and 130 hours for Part 2. Most GlobalFTI students prepare for one part per exam window over 3 to 5 months, sitting exams in the May-June or September-October windows. GlobalFTI’s weekend batches, live online classes, and recorded lectures are specifically structured for this profile.
Each part of the CMA exam has two components. Component 1: 100 multiple-choice questions, 3 hours, each question worth 2 points (200 marks total). Component 2: 2 essay scenarios, 1 hour, each worth 150 marks (300 marks total). Total: 500 marks. Passing score: 360 (72%). The MCQ section is scored first. If you score below the minimum threshold on the MCQ section, your essay responses are not graded. You must pass the MCQ threshold to have your essays evaluated.
Professional IMA membership is approximately $295 per year. Student membership is approximately $45 per year. The CMA programme entrance fee is $300 (professional) or $225 (student). Each part exam fee is $495 (professional) or $370 (student). Total IMA investment for both parts is approximately $1,585 on professional membership or $1,010 on student membership. These are IMA’s fees paid directly to IMA and are separate from GlobalFTI’s preparation fees. Verify current fees at imanet.org before registering.
